For example, potential essay topics might include: the applications of a scientific approach or a new technology to address specific human rights concerns; an analysis of synergies between human rights obligations and the social responsibilities of scientists, engineers and/or health professionals; or the ways in which full implementation of the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress may influence realization of other human rights.

These examples are only provided to spark ideas: students are encouraged to write essays that reflect their own ideas, interests, and insights.

Human Rights Law Essay Competition

The winning essays will be considered for publication by the AAAS Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law Program.This annual essay competition is brought together by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, the Mc Gill Journal of Sustainable Development Law, The University of Cambridge, the Faculty of Law at the University of Nairobi, the CR2 at the University of Chile, the Ateneo School of Governance in Manila, the University of the South Pacific and others, and is supported by the partners of Climate Law and Governance Day 2019.Congratulations to all who participated in the 2018 Global Student Essay Competition.Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: 1) Undergraduate student and 2) Graduate student.The winning students will be recognized at the July 2018 meeting of the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition.As the organisation named after Monsieur René Cassin – the ‘father of the Declaration’ – this competition is part of our programme to mark the UDHR’s anniversary.We are delighted that Joshua Rozenberg, Britain’s best known commentator on the law, will judge this year’s entries.Winners Organised by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), in cooperation with the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law (LCIL) at the University of Cambridge, the Centre for Research on Climate Resilience (CR2) at the University of Chile, and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) of the University of Nairobi, the legal essay competition was open to students of law and related fields at the undergraduate and graduate level, from all regions of the world.Successful finalists were also invited to prepare a brief oral argument based on a hypothetical climate litigation fact pattern provided, for a special moot during Climate Law and Governance Day 2016 on the 11th of November.Every year René Cassin runs a ‘Human Writes’ essay competition to get people thinking about important human rights issues.The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was agreed 70 years ago this year.
